2016-W ½ oz Walking Liberty Centennial Gold Coin

In 1916, the US Mint simultaneously released three brand new and iconic designs for the silver dime, quarter, and half dollar. Today, the Mercury Dime (Weinman), Standing Liberty Quarter Dollar (MacNeil), and Walking Liberty Half Dollar (Weinman) all rank at the top of every coin collector’s list.

In celebration of the 100th anniversary, the US Mint released 24-karat, 99.99% pure gold counterparts in ½, ¼, and 1/10 troy ounce sizes, and this Walking Liberty Half Dollar gold coin fittingly weighs in at ½ troy ounces.

The obverse side features Lady Liberty in stride, American Flag draped over her shoulders and carrying an olive branch. A rising sun is set in the distance, and LIBERTY is stamped around the perimeter. IN GOD WE TRUST and a W for the West Point facility are included in the fields. 2016 is marked at the 6 o’clock position.

The reverse side displays an American Bald Eagle perched on a tree branch. It includes UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and HALF DOLLAR stamped around the perimeter and in the fields. AU, 24K, and 1/2 OZ. are incused in the tree branch, and the designer, Adolph Weinman’s initials, are included just below the eagle’s wing tip.
