Purity.999 FINE SILVER
La Casa de Moneda de México (the Mexican Mint) started production of the Silver Libertad in 1982 as the replacement for the longstanding Mexican Silver Onza.
The 36mm, 99.9% pure silver design presents a thicker coin with unique edge lettering instead of traditional reeded edges. INDEPENDENCIA Y LIBERTAD, which translates to "Independence and Liberty," is prominently stamped around each coin's edge.
Throughout the 1980s, the Mexican Mint struck millions of examples in the original 36mm design, while more recent mintages of the modern 40mm design have not exceeded several hundred thousand.
The Silver Libertad's obverse side features the Mexican Coat of Arms with ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS stamped above a perched Mexican golden eagle.
The Silver Libertad's reverse side proudly displays the breathtaking "Angel of Independence" front and center, with twin volcanic peaks, Popocatépetl and Iztaccihuatl in the distance. 1 ONZA, PLATA PURA, 1984, and LEY .999 are stamped around the fields and rim to denote weight, year, and metal purity.
While the Mexican Federal government backs each Silver Libertad coin, it has no associated denomination or face value. Rather, the Mexican Mint prefers to trade bullion coins for spot plus a premium, and many bullion coins are distributed through a network of bank branches.
The 1984 1 oz Mexican Silver Libertad can be ordered as single 1 oz coins.
